A diesel generator housed in a soundproof enclosure, featuring a VTS system for operation in single-phase or three-phase mode with virtually no loss of power.
Supports 230/400 V, has a maximum power of 16 kW, a rated power of 15 kW, a 2-cylinder 4-stroke engine of 1326 cm³, AVR and electric start.
Equipped with a 3-phase/1-phase switch, CEE 400 V 32 A, CEE 230 V 63 A and CEE 230 V 32 A sockets, a 6-pin connector for AVR, an HGM501 digital unit and a 45 Ah battery.
TheKönner & Söhnen KS 16-1/3E is a Heavy Duty series diesel generator designed for situations where both single-phase and three-phase power may be required on site. The main feature of this model is the VTS system, which allows the generator to operate in either 230 V or 400 V mode with virtually no loss of power. This is what makes it particularly attractive for sites with mixed loads or for users who require greater flexibility during operation.
In practice, this means that a single generator can cover a variety of usage scenarios. If a site requires a powerful single-phase power supply, the KS 16-1/3E operates as a robust 230 V generator. If, however, three-phase equipment needs to be powered or the generator needs to operate correctly with a 400 V mains supply, the model allows it to switch to three-phase mode. For this class of generators, this is a very practical advantage, as it is not always possible or sensible to purchase separate solutions for each type of load.
In 230 V mode, the generator delivers 15 kW of rated power and 16 kW of maximum power. In 400 V mode, the manual specifies 18.75 kVA rated and 20 kVA maximum at cosφ 0.8, which corresponds to approximately the same 15 kW rated and 16 kW maximum. This is precisely why the manufacturer emphasises the ability to operate with almost no loss of power when switching modes.
The model is based on the KS 1400HD engine — a 2-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled diesel engine with a displacement of 1326 cm³. The engine’s power output is 30 hp / 22 kW. This power unit is well suited to heavier and longer-duration operating conditions, where the generator is required not merely as a symbolic backup but for reliable operation under load.
The generator features an electric start and is equipped with a multifunctional digital control unit HGM501. The panel also includes a 3-phase/1-phase mode switch, which is one of the model’s key features. It is important to note that mode switching is only permitted when the load is completely disconnected; therefore, whilst this function offers flexibility, it requires correct operation.
For connecting the load, the KS 16-1/3E is equipped with a 400 V 32 A CEE socket, a 230 V 63 A CEE socket and a 230 V 32 A CEE socket. This configuration makes the generator suitable for connecting both high-power single-phase loads and three-phase equipment. In addition, a 6-pin AVR connector is provided, allowing the model to be integrated into an automatic backup power supply system.
The generator features an AVR, which helps stabilise the voltage and makes operation under load more predictable. The model also has a declared noise level of 76/96 dB, and the unit itself is housed in a soundproof, vandal-proof casing. This is important for long-term operation at sites where the generator must not only be powerful but also sufficiently protected from external influences.
The KS 16-1/3E comes with a 45 Ah battery, includes a transport kit, and measures 1310×835×900 mm with a weight of 363 kg. It is a robust stationary backup solution for sites requiring versatility in phase configuration without the need to upgrade to a higher class of equipment.
It is also worth noting that three-phase operation requires a competent approach to load distribution. The manual explicitly states that the load must be distributed across all three phases, and the imbalance must not exceed 20%. This is precisely why this model is most beneficial to users who have a clear understanding of their power supply system or who work alongside a qualified electrician.
The Könner & Söhnen KS 16-1/3E is a very powerful option for those who need a diesel generator with a large power reserve, electric start, ATS connection and, most importantly, a genuinely useful VTS system, which allows the generator to be flexibly adapted to different types of load.
